AFT Celebrates Victory for Education and Healthcare in 2026 Midterms
WASHINGTON—AFT President's Statement on 2026 Midterm Results
AFT President Randi Weingarten has expressed strong reactions to the outcome of the 2026 midterm elections, highlighting significant political shifts. She stated, "Tonight, the American people unequivocally rejected the corruption, cruelty, chaos and cost-of-living crisis of the Trump era. They said no to the hate, derogation and rot to which we have descended, and yes to candidates who care about others, who want to create dignity and opportunity, and who champion public education, healthcare and a pathway to the American Dream."
The elections saw victories for those advocating for public schools over private school vouchers across various states, including Texas, Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio, as well as in numerous congressional districts and school boards.
The American Federation of Teachers, with its 1.875 million members, played a pivotal role in mobilizing voters alongside the labor movement and allies, aiming to influence the electoral outcome. Weingarten noted the union's significant involvement, stating, "The union vote was a record 15 percent share of the overall electorate, and union voters backed endorsed candidates by +20 points. This result was simply too big to rig."
Looking forward, Weingarten emphasized the need for the incoming Congress to address past damages and work towards improving the lives of everyday Americans. Key areas of focus include strengthening public and higher education, increasing wages, making healthcare more accessible, and reinforcing democratic values. She stressed the importance of continuing progress at the state level, aligning with governors' and representatives' priorities.
Weingarten concluded with a call to action, stating, "We will act on these priorities starting tomorrow. And tonight we will celebrate and reflect on our journey as a nation, how we rejected hate and authoritarianism, and how we can reclaim our freedoms for good."
