Nurses at UMCNO Validate Concerns as Employer Named in Dirty Dozen 2025
Nurses at University Medical Center React to Employer's Inclusion in National COSH's 2025 Dirty Dozen
The recent designation of LCMC Health as one of the 2025 Dirty Dozen employers by the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (National COSH) has not come as a surprise to nurses at University Medical Center New Orleans (UMCNO). The organization, which focuses on enhancing workplace safety, includes LCMC Health in its list, validating the concerns of many nurses regarding the hospital's management practices.
The primary concern highlighted by the nurses is workplace violence, which is a significant issue leading to their planned strike on May 1. The nurses are striving for a strong initial union contract to address these critical issues, as emphasized in National COSH's Dirty Dozen report. "Disappointed but not surprised is how I would put it," stated Mike Robertshaw, a registered nurse in UMCNO's burn intensive care unit. "We don’t want to see LCMC on these kinds of lists, but we also unfortunately know they deserve to be there, and we see why every day as nurses. The threat of workplace violence in our hospital is something we’ve been eager to address, but management has stymied so much of what we’re trying to accomplish."
The Dirty Dozen 2025 report can be accessed on NationalCOSH.org. National COSH, a network of non-profit worker safety advocates, releases this report annually during Workers’ Memorial Week, which honors individuals affected by work-related incidents and runs from April 23 to May 1 this year.
