Michigan an Ideal Candidate for Federal Infrastructure Investment

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo identified Michigan as a top contender for federal infrastructure investment due to its manufacturing history, education opportunities, and policy leaders.

While in conversation with Awenate Cobbina, Chairperson of the Michigan Economic Development Corp. Executive Committee, Raimondo said, “When I think of places in America that are worthy of investment, Michigan is at the top of that list.”

The U.S. Commerce Department, which oversees services including weather services, the Census Bureau, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the International Trade Agency, aims to help American businesses by providing resources, information, and infrastructure.

Raimondo highlighted the Biden administration's Inflation Reduction Act that promotes infrastructure investments such as bridges, roads, and broadband, essential for small businesses. Furthermore, the government has invested in solar energy and semiconductors, powering technology like Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems and electric vehicles (EVs).

Also emphasized was the passing of the CHIPS and Science Act in 2022, which directs funds to domestic semiconductor manufacturing. Raimondo assured that Michigan would share in this advanced chip investment, boosting jobs and reinforcing the supply chain.

To compete globally, Raimondo stressed the importance of a level playing field. In light of countries like China that produce cheaper EVs, the Biden administration placed a 100% tariff rate on Chinese EVs to assist domestic manufacturers.
