Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Project Secures $550 Million Federal Grant
The Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project will receive $550 million from the federal government, announced Gov. Kay Ivey’s office.
The grant, from the Bridge Investment Program under the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, was confirmed on Friday. “This funding is a game-changer for Mobile and Baldwin Counties, and our entire state and region,” stated Ivey. “I thank the federal government for their support of this critical project.”
The project includes constructing a cable stay bridge over the Mobile River and upgrading Broad and Virginia Streets in Mobile and the West Tunnel. Replacement of the 50-year-old Bayway is also part of the plan.
Funding primarily comes from $1.2 billion in bond sales and $1.1 billion in federal loans via the Transportation Infrastructure Financing and Innovation Act (TIFIA).
Additional financial support includes a $125 million grant from 2019 and $250 million from the state.
