Workers at a Nabis Warehouse in California, disheartened by their employer's anti-union tactics, have overwhelmingly voted to join Teamsters Local 630. The 84 new Teamsters include drivers and warehouse associates.
“Our aim is to ensure stability and halt exploitation in the fast-paced cannabis industry,” said Lou Villalvazo, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 630 in Los Angeles. “Organizing and empowering workers promotes their growth into the middle class. We will make these positions into good middle-class jobs through unity and commitment!”
The workers filed for the election on April 20, a date celebrated globally as a cannabis holiday. They are the third group of cannabis workers to join the Teamsters in three weeks and the third group at the company to join the union.
“Cannabis workers are joining Teamsters at an unprecedented rate because we fight hard and secure strong contracts,” said Peter Finn, Teamsters Western Region International Vice President and Food Processing Division Director. “We are excited to do the same for these employees.”
Jonathan Misquez, a warehouse associate at Nabis, said, “I organized to have a voice at Nabis, not just for myself but for my coworkers as well. I wanted to help them receive a contract that reflects their daily hard work. Together we proved our unity.”
Teamsters Local 630, established in 1937, represents workers in various industries, from clerical, warehouse, professional drivers, food service, liquor, food processing, dairy and more. For more information, visit teamsters630.org.
