BLM Approves Sapphire Transmission Line Project in Riverside County

The Facts -

  • BLM approves Sapphire gen-tie line on 40 acres in Riverside County.
  • Sapphire Solar project invests $262M, creating 250 construction jobs.
  • Project transmits up to 117MW of solar energy daily to the electric grid.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – A significant stride in renewable energy was made as the Bureau of Land Management gave the green light to the Sapphire gen-tie transmission line and facilities project. This development will cover approximately 40 acres of public lands in eastern Riverside County, connecting the new Sapphire Solar photovoltaic and storage facility to the electric grid. The project, led by EDF Renewables Development, Inc., encompasses the construction, operation, maintenance, and eventual decommissioning of a key transmission line and associated facilities.

“The Bureau of Land Management supports American Energy Dominance that prioritizes needs of American families and businesses,” stated BLM California State Director Joe Stout.

This initiative is part of a larger framework outlined in the Secretary's Order 3417, which aims to tackle the national energy emergency by enhancing the robustness of the electrical grid and fostering job creation and economic growth across the nation.

Located on private lands, the Sapphire Solar project represents a substantial investment of nearly $262 million in local infrastructure. The construction phase is expected to provide 250 jobs, with an additional 12 permanent positions managing the facility once operational. The project is designed to generate and store up to 117 megawatts of solar energy each day.

The transmission line and facilities will occupy lands specified as Development Focus Area-designated under the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan. This plan not only streamlines renewable energy projects but also protects valuable desert ecosystems and supports recreational activities. Additional details and documents can be found on the BLM National NEPA Register.
