South Grand Island Bridges Rehabilitation Receives $39 Million Funding

In a significant announcement, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer confirmed that $39 million has been procured for the South Grand Island Bridges' rehabilitation. This significant infrastructure development in Grand Island, N.Y., is a strategic move towards addressing the bridge's aging and deterioration problems.

The New York State Thruway Authority will manage this project. Key actions include:

  • Modifying and repairing the bridges to increase resistance to ground motion, seismic activity, and soil failure due to earthquakes,
  • Improving connectivity for pedestrians and bicyclists and enhancing safety for vehicles and maintenance operations.

TheDepartment of Transportation’s Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative, Efficient, and Cost-saving Transportation (PROTECT) Grant program funds this project. This program is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Law.

“South Grand Island Bridges are vital lifelines for Niagara Falls and Tonawanda, connecting communities and carrying thousands of vehicles daily. Recent events like the downstate earthquake and the Baltimore bridge collapse underscore the need for this repair. This whopping $39 million will rehabilitate the South Grand Island Bridges and bolster resilient infrastructure for Western NY. The funding ensures safer bridges, well-paying construction jobs, and better pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure.” - Sen. Schumer

The funding also includes $1.6 million designated for enhancing emergency response planning in Erie, Niagara, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua Counties.

“The Biden-Harris Administration and our congressional delegation support has enabled New York to make historic investments in our infrastructure. The funds are crucial for improving the resiliency of essential bridges vital to Western New York's economy, and for enhancing emergency response coordination in a region susceptible to extreme weather.” - Governor Kathy Hochul
