Hitachi Energy to Expand in PA, Creating Over 100 New Jobs

Hitachi Energy's $70 Million Expansion to Boost Pennsylvania's Job Market

With a significant investment aimed at expanding its operations, Hitachi Energy is set to enhance Pennsylvania's job landscape, supported by strategic state funding.

Harrisburg, PA – Governor Josh Shapiro has announced a substantial investment by the Commonwealth, amounting to over $329,000, to aid the expansion of Hitachi Energy in southwestern Pennsylvania. This investment is a segment of a larger $70 million expansion initiative by Hitachi Energy, aiming to enhance its three facilities in Westmoreland County, leading to the creation of over 100 new jobs and the retention of 299 existing positions statewide. The focal point of this expansion is the transformation of the Mount Pleasant facility into a state-of-the-art manufacturing center, expected to generate 58 new full-time jobs.

The project at Mount Pleasant will involve extensive renovations, expanding production lines, and establishing a new training center to upscale the facility's capabilities. Governor Shapiro emphasized the significance of this move, stating, “When a global technology leader like Hitachi Energy decides to invest and expand in our Commonwealth, it sends a strong message to companies across the nation and around the world that Pennsylvania is open for business.”

Hitachi Energy, renowned for its expertise in high-voltage technologies, received a financial proposal from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), including a $184,000 Pennsylvania First grant and a $145,000 WEDnetPA grant aimed at employee training. DCED Secretary Rick Siger highlighted the importance of supporting the energy sector as a cornerstone of economic growth, attributing Pennsylvania's appeal to its conducive business environment and resources.

Globally headquartered in Switzerland, Hitachi Energy leads in power grids technology and high-voltage products. Luca Calamari, Head of Hitachi Energy’s High Voltage Business Unit in North America, remarked, “Our investments in Westmoreland County highlight our commitment to Pennsylvania as the heart of our High Voltage Business in North America.” The expansion aligns with local economic development goals, as noted by Jason Rigone, Executive Director of the Westmoreland County Industrial Development Corporation, who expressed excitement over the increased production capabilities in the region.

This expansion initiative falls under the strategic efforts of the Governor’s BusinessPA team, a group focused on facilitating business growth within the state through targeted support and financial aid. Since Governor Shapiro's tenure, Pennsylvania has secured over $3.7 billion in private investments, generating more than 5,000 jobs.

Aligning with this, Governor Shapiro's proposed 2025-26 budget prioritizes the execution of Pennsylvania’s 10-year Economic Development Strategy to enhance job creation and economic prosperity. Key budget allocations include:

  • $12.5 million for WEDnetPA to bridge workforce gaps
  • $50 million to boost the innovation ecosystem and life sciences
  • $10 million in AdvancePA tax credits for job creation
  • $50 million for Housing Stock Restoration
  • $10 million increase for the Act 47 Program aiding municipalities in financial recovery
