Last week, as thousands in Houston were left without electricity due to Hurricane Beryl, many United Airlines technicians were told to stay home. However, others were expected to work despite a state of emergency, with hangars and buildings lacking power and functioning restrooms.
“Teamsters Aviation Maintenance Technicians ensure United Airlines’ fleet safety daily. It’s disgraceful that only a few in Houston were protected,” said Jesse Ruiz, President of Local 19. “United Airlines claims workforce safety is paramount; yet, they forced technicians to work during a Category 5 hurricane.”
Local 19 is filing grievances under Article 7K of the United Airlines National Bargaining Agreement, which addresses safety standards. United Airlines technicians in Houston affected by this should contact their shop steward.
