AFSCME President Commemorates National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week
AFSCME President Lee Saunders acknowledged National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, occurring April 14-20, 2024, with a statement.
"911 dispatchers, though not seen, are instrumental during crises. They are the supportive voice in a storm, helping individuals in the most critical moments. With their composed demeanor, they orchestrate emergency responses, where seconds can make a life-or-death difference—saving numerable lives daily."
"Unfortunately, 911 dispatchers are currently classified as 'administrative and clerical workers' in federal law. The proposed 911 SAVES Act, penned by former 911 dispatcher and AFSCME member Rep. Norma Torres, aims to correct this misclassification by recognizing dispatchers as protective service workers. With the correct status, 911 dispatchers can qualify for additional funding, crucial for enhancing training and recruiting call centers staff, and addressing staffing shortfalls. This National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, we urge Congress to pass the 911 SAVES Act to honor these dedicated workers."
