Rosie Brooks: Union Delegate Advocating for Fair Treatment at UCSF CHO

Rosie Brooks, an analyst at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, finds joy in hiking around the Bay Area and sharing meals with those who hold similar values such as gratitude, strength, and compassion. These principles also drive her involvement in workers' rights and union activities.

Brooks became actively involved when her colleagues began organizing a union at the hospital. "I joined NUHW because I wanted to be part of the collective change for all employees at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. I believe my coworkers deserve fair treatment across the board," Brooks stated.

Her affiliation with NUHW allows her to feel part of an organization that is aligned with workers' interests. "It enables me to have an effective voice, not just for myself but for my coworkers when facing unfair treatment or when our contract is blatantly ignored and neglected," she expressed.

As a union delegate, Brooks is dedicated to advocating for positive changes for her colleagues at CHO and ensuring proper interpretation and implementation of the contract. She has been actively involved in negotiations to secure "a solid contract that is fair for everyone" and has learned more effective communication skills.

"Being a delegate has challenged me to learn new ways of communicating with management and coworkers, which is more effective when speaking the language of the contract," Brooks noted.

Brooks emphasizes the importance of diligence in her role as a delegate. "NUHW teaches us to treat every employee with respect, addressing all issues with great attention to detail to reach the best outcome in favor of the person or people I may be representing," she explained. "My goal as an NUHW delegate is always to emerge victorious in helping my coworkers when they face uncertainties related to their position while working at the hospital."

In addition to handling grievances and participating in contract negotiations, Brooks is involved in local political campaigns supporting worker-friendly candidates and healthcare reform, activities she has continued during the current election season.

She encourages her colleagues to familiarize themselves with the contract and engage in union activities. "My hope is that we continue to grow collectively to become more involved, to better understand the policies and statutes of our contract, and that more employees take an interest in stepping up in any role they feel comfortable in to provide their support and unique perspectives," Brooks shared. "That would result in the entire union becoming even stronger and more knowledgeable."
