Nancy Studivant, a Philadelphia Transportation bus driver, said the decision was about gaining a stronger collective voice. "United, we can negotiate for the fair treatment and respect we deserve," she stated.
Philadelphia Transportation worker, Terry Sharkey, emphasized the victory was not just for employees but also for the communities they serve. This unionizing move reflects a growing nationwide demand among bus drivers for better working conditions, citing issues such as unfair treatment, insufficient hours, and inadequate pay.
Richard Hooker Jr., Secretary-Treasurer of Local 623, expressed commitment to securing a fair contract addressing their needs. "Many years ago, Local 623 represented this same barn, and now we’re reunited at last,” he added.
