(SOUTHFIELD, Mich.) – In a major labor victory, registered nurses at Corewell Health of Southern Michigan have voted to join the Teamsters. This move marks one of the largest National Labor Relations Board elections in over two decades, involving more than 9,600 nurses across nine hospitals in Southeastern Michigan.

“Despite Corewell's costly union-busting efforts, these nurses knew their worth and chose to become Teamsters,” stated Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “They recognized that joining the Teamsters was essential for achieving a strong union contract. This victory is a testament to building the biggest, fastest, and strongest Teamsters Union.”

These newly unionized nurses now join over 57,000 fellow Teamsters, organized under the leadership of the O’Brien-Zuckerman administration, which is renowned for its robust representation of North America's workforce.

“Corewell health care workers were hailed as heroes during the COVID-19 pandemic, yet their employer has shown little appreciation,” said Peter Finn, Director of the Teamsters Public Services Division. “Nurses are fed up with disrespect, low wages, and inadequate care quality. Although the fight was tough, Corewell nurses embodied Teamster spirit to secure the strongest union representation. This new unit means the Teamsters Union now represents nearly 50,000 essential health care workers nationwide.”

Since 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has supported 1.3 million workers across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter @Teamsters.
