In a recent debate with former President Donald Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris articulated her vision for a progressive America, positioning herself as the leading choice for working families. Harris emphasized her commitment to "an opportunity economy," aimed at enhancing the lives of the middle and working classes.

Addressing the audience, Harris stated, “I was raised as a middle-class kid,” highlighting her personal connection to the concerns of many Americans. She confidently declared herself the only candidate with a comprehensive plan to uplift the middle class and working people, as she described in response to the moderators’ first question (source).

The debate also underscored the reasons behind AFSCME's endorsement of Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Among her proposals, Harris plans to extend a $6,000 tax cut to families, representing a significant child tax credit initiative. This aligns with AFSCME's advocacy for a care economy that supports affordable childcare.

Critically, Harris addressed Trump's Project 2025, condemning it as a plan that endangers public service unions and workers' rights. The plan includes eliminating overtime protections, dismantling Head Start, and undermining labor unions.

Furthermore, Project 2025 threatens to impose federal control over women's reproductive rights, a move AFSCME opposes as part of their agenda to protect reproductive freedoms. These rights are viewed as fundamental to women's economic security and worker rights, as affirmed in a recent resolution passed by AFSCME delegates.

Harris also lauded the achievements of the Biden-Harris administration, such as the Inflation Reduction Act, which invests in combating climate change and reduces prescription drug costs, including capping insulin prices at $35. She pledged to further reduce drug prices and bolster the Affordable Care Act.

In her closing remarks, Harris called for unity and a renewed focus on the future, stating, “You’ve heard tonight two very different visions for our country... But we’re not going back.” She emphasized the importance of a leadership change that reflects the commonalities shared by Americans and the potential for moving forward collectively.
