(ISSAQUAH, Wash.) – At a crucial point in contract negotiations, thousands of Teamsters at Costco are preparing to strike if an agreement isn't secured by January 31. The rally at Costco's corporate headquarters coincided with the company's annual shareholder meeting, amplifying the workers' demands for a contract that reflects Costco's significant profits.
According to Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien, the company faces a critical choice. “Costco has two choices: respect the workers who made them a success or face a national strike,” he stated. O'Brien emphasized that the contract must mirror the company's successful financial performance.
The Teamsters National Negotiating Committee is pushing for terms that align with Costco's record-breaking revenues. Without a satisfactory offer, around 18,000 workers are poised to take action. Paul Lowrie, a fleet driver and member of Teamsters Local 174, voiced the workers' stance: “We’re demanding a contract that matches the success we made possible.”
Costco's recent financial results underscore the workers' demands. In 2024, the company achieved $254 billion in revenue and $7.4 billion in net profits, marking a significant rise from the previous year and a 135 percent increase since 2018.
Highlighting the urgency, Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, remarked, “We will hold Costco accountable if they refuse to reward the workers who made them billions.” The Teamsters are determined to mobilize if necessary, as the deadline looms.
