Cannabis Drivers Choose Union Representation

In a decisive move, cannabis delivery drivers at Ascend Wellness Holdings in Barry, Illinois, have opted to become members of Teamsters Local 916, reflecting a unanimous vote that highlights their collective interest in enhancing workplace conditions.

Local 916 President JP Fyans emphasized, “Cannabis delivery drivers are essential to the success of this industry. By organizing with the Teamsters, these drivers are paving the way for better wages, improved working conditions, and a collective voice in shaping their future.”

Jesse Case, who directs the Teamsters Food Processing Division, added, “Delivery drivers play an essential role in cultivating trust and satisfaction among consumers, and they deserve to be treated accordingly. Their decision to join Local 916 reflects our shared commitment to addressing the unique challenges of their industry.”

This latest development strengthens the Teamsters' influence within Ascend Wellness Holdings, which operates across multiple states. The union recently secured victories at other company sites, such as in Dwight, Illinois, and Aberdeen, Maryland, over the past year. With the cannabis industry presenting challenges like irregular work hours and fluctuating regulations, drivers are seeking greater security and fairness on the job.

Local 916 Organizer Nike Flesch expressed, “These drivers work hard every day, and we deserve to be treated with the dignity and respect that all workers should have. What we’re setting into motion is a brighter future for the cannabis industry.”

Driver Shane Widmer, who cast his vote in favor of union membership, remarked, “I’m proud to be a part of this family. I’m looking forward to bargaining with Ascend so we can improve the way we are treated, our working conditions and our wages.”
