Baltimore school bus attendant earns award for her dedication and care

Dedicated School Bus Attendant Embraces Multifaceted Role

Melea Anderson, a seasoned school bus attendant for Baltimore County Public Schools, juggles numerous roles with grace and dedication. Her responsibilities extend far beyond the typical expectations, as she becomes a caregiver, mentor, and protector for the students she serves.

Anderson, who has dedicated 14 years to her role, describes her job saying, "Bus attendants, we’re basically moms, nurses, mentors," highlighting the multifaceted nature of her duties.

A primary focus of Anderson's work is ensuring the safety of her students. She explains, "You definitely have to make sure that the kids are safe. We monitor children that are in wheelchairs or (special) seats," emphasizing the importance of secure transportation. Anderson takes extra care to assist children with mobility challenges, ensuring they can safely board and exit the bus.

Her exceptional commitment to her role has earned her the prestigious Never Quit Service Award, presented by AFSCME Maryland Council 3. This award honors public service workers who exceed expectations to better their communities.

Anderson's compassion and dedication are evident in her personal interactions with students. She recalls reaching out to a student struggling with the loss of a grandmother, making daily calls to encourage her to attend school. The student once expressed her gratitude, saying, "I just thank God for you that you came into my life because nobody else cares for me like you do," a moment that deeply touched Anderson.

For Anderson, the role of a bus attendant is more than just a job; it is a vocation driven by the trust and relationships she builds with her students. "They trust you," she says, underscoring the significant impact her presence has on their lives.
