AFT Leaders Condemn Trump's Racist Remarks at Madison Square Rally
Comments from AFT Leaders Following Trump's Rally Remarks
NEW YORK—In response to comments made during Donald Trump's rally at Madison Square Garden, the AFT President Randi Weingarten and Executive Vice President Evelyn DeJesus have issued a statement condemning the derogatory remarks aimed at Puerto Rico and the Latino community. The Asociación de Maestros de Puerto Rico (AMPR), which is affiliated with the AFT, represents over 40,000 educators across the island.
“The Trump campaign’s racist hate was on full, disgraceful display tonight. Dark, narcissistic smears and rank fearmongering have no place in America—and should be disqualifying for any candidate for office," the statement said.
The leaders highlighted what they see as a consistent pattern of attacks from Trump and his allies against communities of color. They noted that the disparaging statements directed at Puerto Rico and Latinos follow previous insults and falsehoods targeting cities like Detroit, Milwaukee, and Philadelphia, as well as Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio.
Weingarten and DeJesus urged Americans to reject such divisive rhetoric, stating, “Let’s show each other, and the world, that divisive, dehumanizing, discriminatory and dangerous rage is not who Americans are—and cast our votes accordingly.”
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) represents 1.8 million individuals, including pre-K through 12th-grade teachers, paraprofessionals, and other school-related personnel. Their membership also encompasses higher education faculty and professional staff, government employees at various levels, nurses, healthcare workers, and early childhood educators.
