AFSCME President Supports Care Workers Recognition Month
In response to President Joe Biden's declaration of April 2024 as Care Workers Recognition Month, AFSCME President Lee Saunders expressed his support. Saunders highlighted the critical role care workers play in society, including early childhood education, end-of-life care, and supporting individuals with disabilities.
They are an integral part of our lives and we are honored to acknowledge their struggle for dignity and respect. It's a known fact that care workers, who are primarily women of color, have been underpaid and undervalued. They are rallying for fair wages, better working conditions, and a voice on the job, which is enhancing their profession.
The Biden administration has reciprocated this acknowledgment with actions. The American Rescue Plan allocated $60 billion towards the care economy, helping numerous providers remain operational during the pandemic. Additionally, the White House's tax credit expansions are providing financial relief to nearly 300,000 child care workers.
We absolutely need to bolster the care economy. We are fortunate to have President Biden as an ally, who supports their organization efforts and believes in their cause.
With these developments, AFSCME and The White House show their commitment to improving conditions for care workers and strengthening the care economy.
