Union Leader's Arrest Sparks Outcry Over Free Speech Rights

WASHINGTON — The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) has called for the swift release of prominent labor leader David Huerta. The demand comes after Huerta, known for his roles as vice president of the California Federation of Labor and president of SEIU California and SEIU-USWW, was detained by ICE agents.

AFSCME President Lee Saunders expressed profound concern over the incident, highlighting the broader implications for constitutional rights. "Americans have a constitutional right to free speech. That right was violated when ICE agents violently arrested and injured Huerta as he peacefully observed immigration enforcement activity in his community," Saunders stated.

In light of these events, Saunders criticized the forceful tactics employed by ICE, which led to Huerta's injury and continued detention. "Huerta was exercising his legal right to speak out and bear witness. In response, ICE used force, caused harm, and continues to hold him in unjust detention," the statement noted.
