- AFSCME vows to fight against these workforce reductions.
WASHINGTON – A significant change to the federal workforce was set in motion as President Trump signed an Executive Order aimed at reducing the number of federal employees. The move has sparked reactions from various stakeholders, including the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).
Lee Saunders, President of AFSCME, expressed strong opposition to the order. In his statement, Saunders emphasized the vital role federal workers play in safeguarding the public from corporate misconduct. He stated, “It is unsurprising that an administration run by billionaires is eliminating oversight and firing dedicated federal workers. They know federal workers protect the public against corporate abuse and won’t allow them to use taxpayer dollars as their own personal slush fund.”
The Executive Order has raised concerns over potential staffing shortages within public services. Saunders highlighted the adverse effects on vulnerable groups, including children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. He argued that instead of enhancing the welfare of the working population, the administration's actions could lead to a crisis in public service staffing.
AFSCME has pledged to continue resisting the changes, with Saunders concluding, “We won’t stand for it, and we will keep fighting back.”
