California Warehouse Employees Achieve Victory Over Pharmaceutical Behemoth
After nearly a month on strike, Teamsters Local 150 members in Sacramento, California, have ratified a three-year agreement, concluding the strike at Cencora (formerly AmerisourceBergen). The new contract addresses workers' concerns regarding wages, health care, and paid time off.
Warehouse worker Weun Choy said, “This was a hard-fought battle, but in the end, everybody gained something. The morale is now higher, and we're eager to return to our duties."
After months of intense negotiations for a fair contract, Choy and his colleagues initiated the strike on March 10. Key features of the new agreement include a new Teamsters health care plan that will save Local 150 members significant costs monthly, wage progression enhancements, and additional paid leave.
“Our members fought resiliently and exhibited an inspiring show of solidarity. We are immensely proud of them,” said Dale Wentz, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 150.
“Local 150 members have robustly expressed their readiness to confront disrespect,” said Peter Finn, President of Joint Council 7 and Teamsters Western Region International Vice President. “Their determination resulted in the company succumbing to their demands."
Cencora/AmerisourceBergen, a Fortune 500 company, is the world's third-largest pharmaceutical distributor. The Teamsters represent workers at distribution centers in Seattle, Columbus, Ohio, Amityville, N.Y., and Puerto Rico.
“The success of this strike highlights the strength that workers possess when united for a just cause,” said Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division.
