Interior Department Announces $43 Million Investment in Rural Water Projects
The Department of the Interior has announced a $43 million investment from President Biden's Investing in America agenda to support rural water projects in rural and Tribal communities. This comes after a previously announced $733 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for similar initiatives. The investment will enhance six projects currently under construction or in the planning phase in Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, and South Dakota.
The Investing in America agenda is the nation's largest climate resilience investment, aimed at improving resilience to drought and climate change in Western communities. The Bureau of Reclamation is directing $8.3 billion over five years through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law towards water infrastructure projects. Since its signing in November 2021, more than $4.1 billion has been allocated to over 537 projects.
Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland stated that new resources from the Investing in America agenda are accelerating the completion of rural water projects, ensuring clean and reliable water supplies across the country. The Bureau of Reclamation also affirmed its commitment to solving challenges faced by rural and Tribal communities due to aging infrastructure and polluted drinking water.
